KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) — The detention of two Perak state executive councillors by the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) Tuesday shows that the steps taken to improve the agency’s capacity is bearing fruition, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
“Now the ACA is very active and I am happy with that, especially with the increase in the number of enforcement officers; its investigation capacity has also been strengthened.
“The increase in capacity has resulted in the agency becoming more active.
“What we are seeing at the moment is the result of (the ACA) mounting a closer monitoring than before. The arrest of the two Perak executive councillors is due to this improvement in the ACA,” he told reporters after attending the 4th National Water Resources Council meeting at the parliament house today.
The two Perak state executive councillors from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) were among six people detained by the ACA on suspicion of corruption in connection with a RM180 million housing project in Seri Iskandar near Ipoh.
The ACA said in a statement today that those detained were also suspected of involvement in sexual corruption.
Abdullah said the ACA acted based on information it received.
“I know nothing (of the arrests). I was not informed, and it’s not necessary to inform me. I only heard about it in the news… it is a matter for the ACA to decide, not us,” said Abdullah.

I don’t know who the Prime Minister is trying to kid. Definitely not clear thinking Malaysians!!
If the ACA is as effective as the Prime Minister is claiming how come there are not more corrupt politicians and their surrogates, and current and former government officials being arrested? Some in the Judiciary Department come to mind. How about some current and former bigwigs in the Police Force?
The day I see big name politicians and their relatives being investigated and arrested by the ACA is the day that I believe the ACA has teeth. Otherwise what we see today is just for show.
