Yes, Taib’s dominance must end

I couldn’t agree more with this headline quote on Malaysiakini of Anwar calling at end to Taib Mahmud’s dominance in Sarawak politics. Taib Mahmud is currently the longest serving chief minister of any state in Malaysia. He has held on to power much longer than Mahathir ever did.
Ask any literate Sarawakian, and there is none that does not have an opinion of this man who has amassed massive wealth by virtue of his powerful position as the longest serving chief minister in Malaysia. There is no business that is of any significance in Sarawak that the Taib family does not have its tentacles on.
A close friend of mine told me of a story where her company (a foreign cement company in Malaysia) had to pay the cement company owned by Taib’s family for the “priviledge” of supplying the cement needed for the hydro-electric dam constructions in Sarawak. This foreign company was the only company in Malaysia that had the kind of cement needed for dam construction.
I think that the people of Sarawak are easily misled, especially the poor rural folks, by promises made by the BN-led government of Sarawak. I think it is time that the people of Sarawak get rid of this man once and for all and give Anwar Ibrahim a chance.
Among the promises Anwar have made to Sarawakians are that all Native Customary Rights land will receive a title and that the position of chief minister will be given to a Dayak. As a Dayak from Sarawak, just these two promises are enough to give my vote of confidence to Anwar. Land ownership is an issue that is close and dear to the hearts of the Dayaks of Sarawak. Without a title whatever land the Dayaks have claimed means nothing. Their land has been taken, and are being taken over by the government under the pretext of development. Development? Their lot has not changed all that much despite the “development” promised by the government.
It is indeed time for Taib Mahmud to go. And no to his son as his successor either.

Puteri,
Taib’s time has come. I’d love to see him prosecuted for corruption. Maybe, if the opposition takes power, there can be an investigation like they are doing in Penang.

Puteri/Doug,
I fully agree with both of you. It’s about time this guy should go and be investigated like those other leaders who were thought to be trustworthy, however a corrupt person.
