Was cyclone Nargis caused by climate change?

The following was taken from Aliran’s website. I think Aliran should just stick to their theme of fighting justice, freedom and solidarity and leave the science news especially, a lop-sided view of a science news!

The deaths of over 20,000 people and reports of over 40,000 missing is a sad reminder to the world that it has done little to contain greenhouse gas emissions, says the New Delhi-based Centre for Science and the Environment (CSE).

* Climate change is urgent, real and happening. We know that large parts of the sub-continent will be worst impacted. We know that we are climate victims.
* But we do not connect the dots to recognise the fact that the tropical cyclone Nargis, which has led to such enormous devastation in Myanmar, is also because of changing climate. It is not just a natural disaster.
* The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has established that climate change will intensify cyclones.
* Is Nargis then the beginning of the change? If so, why is the rich industrialised world doing so little to contain its emissions?

Why are we not recognising that these are victims of climate change? Why are we not beginning to penalise the polluters, so that emissions are reduced?

Tropical cyclone Nargis, which has killed over 20,000 people and reportedly left 40,000 missing in its wake, is not just a natural disaster, says Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). “While we can never pinpoint one disaster as the result of climate change, there is enough scientific evidence that climate change will lead to intensification of tropical cyclones,” says Sunita Narain, director, CSE.

“Nargis is a sign of things to come. Last year, Bangladesh was devastated by the tropical cyclone Sidr. The victims of these cyclones are climate change victims and their plight should remind the rich world that it is doing too little to contain its greenhouse gas emissions,” Narain added.

What a disgraceful piece of writing from a supposedly science center! To connect cyclone Nargis to climate change is just laughable! Sunita Narain, director of CSE, should simply have stopped her statement at “While we can never pinpoint one disaster as the result of climate change” and leave it at that but instead she just had to insert, “there is enough scientific evidence that climate change will lead to intensification of tropical cyclones.” What evidence is she talking about?

Remember the forecast about increased hurricane activity due to global warming after Katrina in 2005? The following two years were the most quiet hurricane season!! And here you have Sunita Narain repeating the same alarmist projection after cyclone Nargis! And worst, she wants the industrialized countries penalized for causing “victims” of natural disasters!

Sunita Narain should read more on the topic of climate change from other scientists who do not readily fall for the climate change and natural disasters crap, and not merely rely on the IPPC report which was prepared for politicians with an agenda.

Has she heard that over 31,000 American scientists reject the theory of anthropogenic global warming? A consensus is not enough to prove that there is global warming.

Fortunately, it doesn’t matter what any of you think. Global warming makes sense and the increased storm activity might very well be related to it. Maybe if you live on an inland waterway your property will become oceanfront property in within 20 years. Otherwise, I can’t see any benefit to the human race or to any other species. There’s no downside to limiting carbon emissions — why not do it for our health, if not for our planet.
