Jungle Sex and Valentine’s Day Ramblings

An amorous rendevous behind lush green bushes or in the river may seem like a titillating prospect for some. But for Orang Asli villagers who stumble upon such acts of uninhibited passion in their backyard, the situation only arouses anger.
This is the predicament faced by the Semai villagers of Kampung Sungai Tesong in Sungkai, Perak.
Parents are forced to be ever vigilant when leading their children around the village grounds in fear of an unintended lesson on the ‘birds and the bees’.
Met recently, the villagers pinned the blame on outsiders who attend the adventure camps and nature parks in the vicinity, which often see couples slipping behind a bush to indulge in an adventure of another sort.
According to Orang Asli activist Tijah Yok Chopil, these couples are turning to the dense jungle to share intimate moments in a bid to steer clear of the prying eyes of Islamic religious authorities.
Full story here.
The first thought that came to my mind as I read this Malaysiakini story was “Why can’t these amorous couples get a hotel room or something instead of making out behind the bushes or on river rocks in the jungle?”
Oh. These couples were trying to “steer clear of the prying eyes of Islamic religious authorities.”
That says a lot. The couples were Muslims.
Of course an unmarried Muslim couple cannot easily get a hotel room without a group of men from the religious department knocking on their hotel room door with video camera in hand and breaking up their romantic tryst.
It’s that time of the year again. No, I am not talking about the upcoming general elections!
I am talking about Valentine’s Day.
The time of year when the good folks from the various religious departments and their eager volunteers would roam the parks, dark parking lots, and raid hotel rooms and round up unmarried Muslim couples caught in compromising situations.
I am surprised that I have not read anything in the Malaysian newspapers warning Muslims to stay away from Valentine’s Day celebrations this year.
Last year, some guy named Ramli Nuh from the Islamic religious authorities said, “Unmarried couples might come together and mingle with each other in unacceptable ways.”
Yeah, right, as if couples need Valentine’s Day to mingle in unacceptable ways!
It seems that the religious authorities in Malaysia are not the only ones concerned about couples coming together in unacceptable ways on Valentine’s Day.
In Thailand, the Police and ’student inspectors’ from the Education Ministry are planning to “swoop on motels, malls and parks to ensure youths behave themselves on the ‘Day of Love’ ” because many teens are planning to celebrate the day by having sex.
I did not know that Thailand, so well known as a sex tourist destination, has their version of the morality police.
The whole point of this rambling is even with the presence of the morality police, couples who want to have a go at it, will do it even to the point of going to the jungle if hotel rooms are hard to get!
