An elderly ethnic Chinese man has been buried as a Muslim after his Buddhist family lost a battle with the Islamic authorities who said he had converted, his son said today.
Police seized the body of Gan Eng For, who died on Sunday aged 74, after his oldest son - himself a Muslim convert - said he had switched to the religion last year.
Other family members said Gan could not have converted because he was senile and paralysed after suffering two strokes.”He could not even move his arms or talk,” his other son 42-year-old Gan Hock Sin told AFP.
“It is shocking that Islamic authorities say he recited some Islamic words when he was being converted last year,” he said.

This news story as reported in Malaysiakini, is just the latest in a series of “body snatching” carried out by the Police on a dead person, over the objections of the majority of the family members of the deceased person.
I did not realize that among the many responsibilities of the police in Malaysia, is to do the bidding of the Islamic authorities and snatch dead bodies away from their families.
The Islamic authorities have chosen to believe the word of the Muslim member of the family over the words of the family members who actually took care of the man before his death.
The arguments brought forward by the family about the impossibility of the deceased having converted due to his health condition (senile and paralysed) was not enough to convince the Islamic authorities.
The eagerness of the Islamic authorities to have the deceased person buried a Muslim is beyond disgraceful. It is almost like they needed to do it, because it showed (in their twisted minds) that non Malays are becoming Muslims on their death beds.
I don’t know if I’d use the word “unfair” to describe the government’s actions, but two words close to describing what I would be feeling had I been in that kind of situation would be “murderous rage”.
Come on la, the man is already dead. He cannot say whether he is a Muslim or not any more. If the Muslim son of the dead man was really concerned about his Muslim father, why was the father still under the care of non-Muslim family members? Huh, huh?
What if he was never a Muslim? Has his “haram” body not desecrated the Muslim cemetery? Isn’t it akin to burying a pig in a Muslim cemetery?
Huh, huh?
