KUALA LUMPUR: Blogger Jeff Ooi was questioned by the police for about two hours over his remarks in an interview on Al-Jazeera news channel last month. He was questioned at the Federal Commercial Crimes Department at Bukit Perdana following a police report lodged by an unidentified person against him on Nov 19.The report alleged that Ooi tarnished the country’s image and caused racial tension with his statements in the Nov 10 interview pertaining to a protest organised by Bersih, a coalition of opposition parties and non-governmental organisations. The interview was subsequently broadcast on YouTube since Nov 10.

Ooi was accompanied by three lawyers and arrived at the police headquarters at 1.30pm to record his statement and left at 3.15pm.

Three other police reports were lodged against Ooi on Nov 17.

Story on The Star

Is it a crime to tarnish the country’s image? If it is, which law specifically says that tarnishing the name of the country is a crime? How has Jeff Ooi’s statements on Al Jazeera caused racial tension?

Were there riots in the streets of Malaysia, great unhappiness among Malaysians because of what Jeff Ooi said?

It is ok for people in UMNO and in the government to make statements with racial overtones but not ok for others especially those in the opposition.

There is so much corruption in high office, and unsolved murders in the country, and all the police wants to do is question Jeff Ooi.

Its a political ploy. Recent events bombarded by media and newspaper….come election…people will vote not because of policies or prices of goods going up. But….

It will be because…’our nation in danger ..vote for government who can safeguard the nation’.

Cause i am sure if election was held before any of these events took place…sure will lose some seats.

    But now….different story already.

You think so? You think that those people who took to the streets are not enough to turn the outcome of the elections?

I read somewhere that PM will not dare call elections any time soon. He will wait till things cool down a bit. Right now there are too many people showing their dissatisfaction with the gov’t.
